World Medals, Mexico, Ferdinand VII (1808-1821), oval Educational Silver Prize Medal, 1818, from José Ignacio Paz, by F. Gordillo, oval medallion of King and Queen Maria Isabel [of Portugal], above crowned globes with attributes of education and music around, rev Figures of Faith and Justice present book and medal to two young boys, 53.5 x 39.5mm (Grove I, F 229a; Vives 329). Extremely fine and rare.
The medal is also recorded in gold. José Ignacio Paz is recorded a the Director of the primary school in Veracruz. There is also a painting, "Allegory of crowning of Mexican Emperor Augustin I" in the National History Museum, Mexico City, which is attributed to José Ignacio Paz, though the cataloguers do not know whether the two are one and the same.
