Foreign Coins and Medals, Russia, Catherine I, silver medal, by Johann Georg Waechter, no. 54 from the series of 65 portrait medals of Grand Dukes, Tsars and Emperors, struck c. 1770s, bust of the Empress l., with a strand of pearls in her hair, signed I.G.W. on truncation, rev. legend in six lines between crown at top and number 54 below, 38.5mm, wt. 23.01gms. (Diakov 1657 [R3]; Smirnov 54), a few stained spots on reverse, otherwise good very fine, very rare
Diakov illustrates an example of the copper medal where the relief is shallower and there is no signature on the truncation. Confusion with the signature caused Forrer (BDM V, 338), who read it as G.W., to attribute the medal to Waechter's younger brother Georg Christian. (700 - 900 GBP)
