George V. 1910-1936. Æ penny. 9.51 gm. 30 mm. King's Norton Metal Company (Birmingham). 1919 KN. His bare headed bust left; GEORGIVS V DEI GRA BRITT OMN REX FID DEF IND IMP around / Britannia seated right; ONE - PENNY around; 1919 below with a small KN to the left. S. 4053 (£1000 in EF). Peck 2257. Freeman 187 (R2). Brown and red; choice; well struck portrait; clear reverse; a faint rub away from being fully Uncirculated. A significant rarity in the George V penny series; very seldom offered, particularly so choice.

The Frank Robinson Collection.

The 1918H and 1919H and the 1918 KN and 1919KN pennies show a faint outline of the obverse portrait in the reverse field. The result, in addition to the effect on the field, is loss of detail on Britannia. What happened? This seems a design characteristic of this issue-the portrait requires more metal to fill the die and the reverse suffers. London issues of this type show the same characteristic.
