Middlesex 290. London, Piccadilly. London Corresponding Society. Æ halfpenny. 11.43 gm. 29 mm. Dies by Jacob made for Skidmore. A man hanging from a gallows, P(eye)T (Thomas Paine rebus) above the crossbar, a cap of Liberty on a pole behind, an obelisk inscribed 1796 on the upper part, PEACE on the lower part, a shield with an anchor and HOPE written above; symbols of religious and political power strewn on the ground below / A circular legend around a cypher, LCS; DEDICATED TO THE LONDON CORRESPONDING SOCIETY in the outer ring; MAY THESE ENDEAVORS MEET REWARD on the inner ring. Edge: plain but, as the cataloger for R. Brown noted, "filed". Uncirculated; red and brown. Slight spots on obverse; otherwise choice with much original color and mirror luster. The DNW cataloger believed the filing was "to deceive." While this seems a reasonable explanation, the work was done very early in the life of this token and another possible explanation was that it was done at or near the time of minting to remove an unwanted edge legend.

Ex Robinson Brown. DNW June 2015 ($775 all in).
