George V gold Sovereign 1916-C MS63 PCGS, Ottawa mint, KM20. A remarkable example of this key to the George V Sovereign series. Fully Choice Mint State, a scattering of tiny marks are present but do not individually stand out without the aid of a glass. The strike was exacting and just a hint of faint reddish tone has settled upon the golden surfaces, accentuating the relief of the classic Sovereign motifs without limiting the cartwheeling effect of the underlying luster. Whether due to a loss at sea during World War I or as casualties to the melting pot, the Charlton catalog estimates a surviving population of 50 pieces for this date, of which 37 are currently certified by NGC and PCGS combined. With such limited availability, we suspect competition for ownership of this rare offering will be intense. From the Schroeder Collection of Canadian Coins
