Great Britain
George I gold Guinea 1714 AU55 NGC, Royal mint, KM538, S-3628, Fr-538. Prince Elector issue. The first issue of George I, a rare date, and exceptionally attractive in its presentation, with the original brightness of the fields remaining undiminished by evidence of light circulation and lovely orange-gold accents adorning the peripheral legends. The strike, often incomplete in the centers on this issue, shows quite full as well, with the garter star on the reverse rising to near full completion. Altogether, a wonderful example for the collector. After the death of Queen Anne and at the age of 54, George ascended to the British throne, becoming the first Monarch from the House of Hanover. Far from the most obvious selection however, over 50 people could claim closer blood ties; these closer relations ultimately being passed up due to the 1701 Act of Settlement, which prohibited Roman Catholics from inheriting the throne. George, a Protestant, cleared this hurdle, but controversy still remained. Some argued that Anne's half-brother, a Catholic, still deserved the throne. In the end, the attempts to depose George would fail and he would reign until his death in 1727 when the throne passed to his son, George II.

Estimate: 6000-8000 USD
