Augustin I Iturbide gold "Augstinus" 8 Escudos 1822 Mo-JM MS61 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM313.2, Onza-1777. The error legend variety with AUGUSTINUS misspelled without the second U. The rarer variety of the date, extremely rare in the observed condition, with this piece being the only Mint State certified specimen at either NGC or PCGS. More important however is that this example is also exceptional in terms of its appearance. Its surfaces are lightly toned in apricot-gold hues, with bright mint bloom in the fields and very few individually mentionable marks. The planchet, frequently imperfect in the centers on this type, shows no issues and strike incompleteness, common to virtually all survivors, is relatively slight; all considered, this piece would have just as easily fit into a MS62 holder. For the collector, undoubtedly a special opportunity to add a world-class coin that would improve any numismatic cabinet.
