Republic gold "Mule" Peso 1898 Go-R MS64 NGC, Guanajuato mint, KM410.3, Fr-161. A scarce and interesting variety, created when the mint mistakenly paired a 5 centavos die that bears the 1898 date, with a "1 Peso" reverse die. This example, with its bright golden coloration, sharp strike and few marks, is just about as pleasing as one will find. The term "mule" is a numismatic colloquialism that means an item created pairing die that were originally unintended for each other. While the origin of the term is uncertain, it came to use because a mule in animal terms is created by the pairing of a male horse and a female donkey.
