Republic gold "Merida Founding Centennial" Medallic 50 Pesos 1942 MS64 NGC, Mexico City mint, Grove-524. 39mm/44.93g. Struck for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Merida, the capital of the Yucatan state. A wonderfully designed item that depicts the strong Mayan culture of the region, with the sun beginning to rise and the rays extending beyond a temple on the obverse. The arms of the city are depicted on the reverse. Very rare as a type with only 3 pieces reportedly struck in gold.
