Alexander III silver Medal Honoring Numismatist C.C. Giel 1894 MS62 NGC, by Vasyutinsky, Diakov-1103.1 (R2), Smirnov-1032, 56mm. Issued to honor Christian Christianovich Giel on the 25th Anniversary as a promoter of numismatics. Obv. Half-length portrait of Giel left. Rev. Female figure writing on column with Petropavlovsk fortress in background. Boldly struck in high relief, with matte surfaces and ash-gray patina. Minor marks are noted and the overall appearance is quite nice. A very rare medal. Giel is a storied figure in Russian numismatics. He was the custodian of the Hermitage coin cabinet, as well as a publisher of numerous studies, many of which involved ancient coins.
