Proof Lincoln Cents
1936 1C Type Two -- Brilliant Finish -- PR66 Red Cameo PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint resumed its program of commercial proof set offerings in 1936, after a two-decade hiatus. The cents produced early in the year had a Satin finish, but this proved unpopular with collectors, so the Mint switched to the Brilliant Finish partway through the year. Coins with Cameo contrast are seldom encountered. A total of 5,569 proof Lincoln cents was produced in 1936, split between the two finishes. Proofs could be ordered by the set, but individual pieces could also be requested. The cent was priced at 16 cents per coin, but single coin purchases required the same 8 cents postage as a full proof set, so buying by the set was certainly advantageous. The original packaging was somewhat primitive, with each coin enclosed in a transparent cellophane envelope, but this helped keep the price of proof offerings down to a reasonable level. Most of the coins were soon removed from the original packaging and stored in albums or commercially produced flips. All these storage methods tended to result in finger prints from handling, oxidation, and fly spotting, making 1936 proof cents with pristine surfaces quite elusive today.
The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with impeccably preserved original red surfaces that show highlights of crimson on the upper reverse. The design elements are sharply detailed and the fields are deeply mirrored, contrasting boldly with the frosty devices. Eye appeal is terrific Population: 4 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer (2/17).
