Seated Quarters
1853/53 25C No Arrows, Briggs 1-A, FS-301, MS66 NGC. Briggs 1-A, FS-301, showing repunching on the 53 in the date. The sole dies known for the No Arrows issue. This Gem 1853 No Arrows quarter displays splendid peach, rose, and ocean-blue patina on lustrous surfaces devoid of mentionable marks. Strong eye appeal and a splendid, sharp strike make this No Arrows quarter an obvious target for series specialists.
The Guide Book records a mintage of more than 15 million pieces for the 1853 Arrows and Rays quarters, versus only 44,200 pieces for the 1853 No Arrows. Imbalances in the ratios of gold and silver after 1849, due to the California Gold Rush, had made silver coinage overvalued -- worth more as melted bullion than its face value -- and in 1853 the Mint would reduce the amount of silver proportionally in all denominations smaller than one dollar to a level that would make melting unprofitable. This reduced weight standard was denoted by the Arrows design on half dimes and dimes, and Arrows and Rays on quarters and half dollars. Census: 4 in 66, 4 finer (2/17).
