Early Dollars
1799 $1 7x6 Stars, B-8a, BB-165, R.3, AU53 PCGS. Bowers Die State II. The 1 in the date is distant from the curl and Liberty's mouth is open, both useful identifiers for BB-165. A die crack from the inner two points of star 7 through LIB of LIBERTY confirms the obverse used, only to strike this variety. Likewise, the reverse die is unique to BB-165, with evidence of the N in UNITED originally cut upside down, then corrected, leaving a wayward serif between N and I. Shades of umber and blue enrich the borders, ceding to steel-gray with tan-gold undertones on this sharply struck early dollar. Marks are few and far between -- none of consequence -- with traces of mint luster beneath the rich patina. Housed in a previous generation green label holder.
