Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1864 $3 AU58 PCGS. The 1864 three dollar gold piece claims a small wartime mintage of 2,630 pieces, and few examples were saved for numismatic purposes. Instead, the issue was widely hoarded, and either melted for bullion value or exported. This attractive near-Mint specimen shows just a trace of wear on the high points of the sharply impressed design elements, and the pleasing orange-gold surfaces are lightly marked, with traces of original mint luster. Population: 22 in 58, 40 finer (2/17).
