Liberty Half Eagles
1842-O $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1. Specialists in mintmarked Liberty Head gold find a challenge when it comes to the 1842-O five dollar issue. As one of several unsung rarities among the early Liberty fives, this New Orleans issue is scarcer than some of its Charlotte and Dahlonega counterparts -- although not always recognized as such. PCGS estimates less than 100 pieces are known in all grades, putting it on a par with the 1842-C Small Date and the 1842-D Large Date. This is a Choice example with still-lustrous antique-gold patina and only pinprick marks. The portrait is reasonably sharp, while the coin shows high point incompleteness on the eagle's neck, leg, and arrow fletchings, a combination of wear and weak strike. Population: 15 in 45, 11 finer (1/17).
