Liberty Half Eagles
1862 $5 AU58 PCGS. As a result of widespread hoarding of precious-metal coinage during the early days of the Civil War, the government suspended specie payments late in 1861. Mintages of all gold coins dropped accordingly in 1862, when only 4,430 business-strike Liberty half eagles were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. As might be expected, the 1862 half eagle is an elusive issue in all grades today and high-grade specimens are particularly difficult to locate.
Heritage Auctions has handled only two Mint State examples of the 1862 in the last decade, making the appearance of this attractive near-Mint specimen an important opportunity for series specialists. Only the slightest trace of friction is evident on the high points of the strongly impressed design elements and the lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster throughout. Eye appeal is quite strong for the grade. We expect intense competition from series enthusiasts and Civil War era collectors when this lot is called. Population: 8 in 58 (2 in 58+), 4 finer (2/17).
