Liberty Double Eagles
1882-CC $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. No double eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1880 and 1881. When double eagle coinage resumed in 1882, a nominal total of 39,140 coins was struck, with two die varieties known for the date. This coin shows the first C in the mintmark placed higher than the second, identifying the scarcer Variety 1-A. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces of this attractive AU53 example show vibrant mint luster on the obverse and much prooflike reflectivity on the reverse.
