Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1925-S $20 MS61 PCGS. The 1925-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle claims a deceptively large mintage of nearly 3.8 million pieces. The great majority of this high-production issue was melted after the Gold Recall of the 1930s, and the 1925-S is scarce to rare in all grades today. Experts estimate a surviving population of 275-330 coins in all Mint State grades, with a like number extant in circulated condition. The present Mint State coin is well-struck but shows a touch of softness on the Capitol building. The pleasing greenish-gold surfaces are lightly abraded for the grade, with vibrant mint luster.
