Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1926-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth write of the 1926-S double eagle that: "The rather impressive mintage (of 2,041,500 pieces) was all but obliterated from the public's hands, though a few have turned up in overseas bank hoards." Recent research by Roger Burdette estimates a survival of about 2,000 coins, of which all but 500 pieces or so are from repatriated foreign holdings. The present frosted, near-Gem example displays pleasing greenish-gold color with lustrous olive and tan overtones, along with sharply struck design elements. Some small marks are noted on the upper reverse rim. PCGS lists only 42 examples in a numerically finer grade (2/17).
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2004), lot 10549; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2007), lot 5288.
