Coins of Hawaii
1883 50C Hawaii Half Dollar MS66 PCGS. CAC. Through MS64, the 1883 Hawaii half dollar is usually available, but Gem or finer coins are rare. This Premium Gem CAC coin is well within the Condition Census. The strike is sharp, and the softly frosted surfaces display blatantly original milky-gray toning with tinges of deep russet around the relief elements. There are no mentionable abrasions.
The half dollar and other silver issues of 1883 bear the portrait of King Kalakaua, who was elected to the throne in 1874 and reigned until his death in 1891. The silver coinage of 1883, produced for the Pacific island nation by the San Francisco Mint, are a numismatic window into Kalakaua's efforts to establish a growing kingdom. Rarely is an example of any denomination offered in such fine condition as the present half dollar. Population: 4 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer. CAC: 5 in 66, 0 finer (2/17).
