Morgan Dollars
1887 $1 Donkey Tail, VAM-25A, MS61 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. The "Donkey Tail" is named after the die break beneath the right base of the D in DOLLAR. Initially designated as VAM-1A, but reclassified after it was proven to be a later die state of VAM-25. VAMworld.com enthuses, "Mint State Donkey Tails are truly ultra rare!" For the variety, the most frequently certified grade at PCGS is XF45. This lustrous and brilliant example is lightly abraded for the grade though the centers are softly brought up and the upper cheek has a shallow mint-made strike-through. Population: 8 in 61, 8 finer (2/17).
Ex: Houston Signature (Heritage, 12/2013), lot 3735, which realized $3,818.75.
