British copperplate-engraved view of Santo Domingo by Arnoldus Montanus and translated in English by John Ogilby, 1671 (London), hand-colored. 13-3/4" x 11-3/8" Bird's-eye view of Santo Domingo, an important port city founded in 1498 by Bartholomew Columbus (the younger brother of Christopher Columbus). Known as the "Gateway to the Caribbean," the city was a hub of trading activity from the European nations to the Caribbean and beyond. Colorful, large print with toning and minor marks along edges.
