Julius Caesar, late spring-early summer 48. Denarius (Silver, 19mm, 4.47 g 6), mint moving with Caesar. Female head to right (Clementia?), wearing an oak wreath, pendant ear-ring and pearl necklace; her hair bound into a jeweled bun at the back; behind, LII (= 52 = Caesar's age). Rev. CAE - SAR Trophy of Gallic arms; on right, axe surmounted by a wolf's head. Babelon (Julia) 26. BMCRR 3955. Crawford 452/2. CRI 11. Sydenham 1009. A lovely, lightly toned and boldly struck example. Both sides struck slightly off center; tiny test cut on the reverse edge at 5:30 and with some earthen encrustations as found, otherwise, extremely fine.
