Ex Garrett Collection. Auction Bank Leu/NFA , Zurich, October 1984. Lot 429

An extraordinary piece of work, curious and amusing to the connoisseur. J. W. Garett bought it as an original and unique bulla, the seal used on documents. Gold bullae are indeed known to have been used on very important charters or decrees. The many legend mistakes and the general style of this object, however, prove to be what is termed post-Byzantine, or an object made in Byzantine style after 1453. This "bulla" seems to have been produced in Sarajevo by a workshop active in the 19th cebtury. Some of its customers included the Russian consul and the young Arthur Evans. Its products are now very seldom seen.
