QATADID SHARIFS OF MECCA: Qatada b. Idris al-Muta'in, 1201-1220, AR fractional dirham (0.46g), NM, ND, A-B1160, obverse al-amir / al-'adil / qatada, reverse al-imam / al-nasir / ahmad, some light hornsilver on the reverse, heretofore unpublished and presumed unique, Fine, RRRR. This is the first coinage struck in Mecca since the Ayyubid dinar dated AH594, struck by the founder Qatada b. Idris, recognizing the 'Abbasid caliph, perhaps in opposition to the contemporary Ayyubid ruler of the Yemen, Isma'il b. Tughtekin, who proclaimed himself caliph in 597, thus in opposition to the 'Abbasid caliphate.
