The Roman Empire

Julia Domna, wife of Septimius Severus and mother of Caracalla and Geta. Aureus 211, AV 7.34 g. IVLIA PIA – FELIX AVG Draped bust r., her hair arranged in waves with a flat bun at the back. Rev. VOTA PVBLICA Julia Domna, veiled, standing l. and dropping incense from her r. hand over altar and holding box of perfumes with her l. C –. BMC –, cf. p. 435, 33A (denarius). RIC –. Apparently unique and unrecorded. An elegant portrait of enchanting beauty, the work
of a very skilled master engraver, struck in high relief on a very broad flan.
