Caius Caesar (died 4 AD). AR Denarius, c. 17 BC. Obv. CA-ES-AR. Bare, youthful head (Caius Caesar?) right within oak wreath. Rev. AVG-VST divided by candelabrum ornamented with rams' heads; all within wreath entwined with bucrania and paterae. RIC 540 (Augustus). RSC 2. AR. g. 3.79 mm. 18.00 RR. A pleasant example of this very rare issue. Superb iridescent old cabinet tone. VF/Good VF. Caius, son of Agrippa and Julia, born in B.C. 20, was adopted by Augustus and given the name of Caesar. He was wounded during a battle in Armenia in A.D. 3 and died the following year. (D.R. Sear, RSC, p. 161).
