Sicily. Sicily, Mercenaries (?). AE Litra, c. 344-336 BC. Obv. Beardless male head left, wearing pileus. Rev. The monster Skylla swimming to left, right arm raised, holding oar in left; at her waist, foreparts of two hunting dogs. Calciati III, pl. 319,1. SNG Cop. 1992 (Skylletium). SNG Morcom 878. HN Italy 2565 (Scylletium). AE. g. 6.31 mm. 21.00 RR. Very rare. An outstanding example, in exceptional condition for the issue. Lovely deep olive green patina. Good VF. This coin appears to be overstruck on a Syracusan litra, Athena/Hippocamp (Calciati II p. 87.42) with clearly visible traces of undertype: Athena's Corinthian helmet in left field of obverse and the hippocamp tail below the foreparts of two dogs on reverse. This issue, often attribute to Skilletium in Bruttium on the basis of the reverse type, has mostly been found in excavations in Locri and in north-central Sicily and is often overstruck on a Syracusan litra.
