1939 5C Reverse of 1940, FS-901, PR67 PCGS. CAC. The Bowers reference reports that the "vast majority" of 1939 proofs are the Reverse of 1938 type with wavy and indistinct steps on Monticello. The present Superb Gem proof is clearly the less-seen Reverse of 1940 with six razor-sharp steps. A thin veil of champagne-gold toning adds visual allure to the glittering and glassy-smooth mirrored surfaces of this splendid example. Population: 77 in 67 (7 in 67+), 1 finer.
