Colonials
1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Small Planchet, MS64 NGC. Noe-16, W-835, Salmon 2-B, R.2. 72.5 grains. An impressive full weight example struck at the 72 grains standard. Many examples of Noe-16 are full weight or nearly so, although we have records of pieces that are considerably underweight, such as lot 139 in the Hain Family Collection that was less than 60 grains.
The Small Planchet Pine Tree shillings are extremely rare in Mint State with just six such pieces certified at PCGS, and the present piece is far finer than the other five that all grade MS61 or MS62. In comparison, PCGS has certified 34 Mint State examples of the Large Planchet Pine Tree shillings, including seven pieces certified MS64 and one in MS65. The colonial type collector who seeks Mint State examples of both planchet types will find this Small Planchet type to be elusive. Approximately 20 Small Planchet varieties are known, but only three of those varieties, Noe-16, 17, and 29, rate more plentiful than R.5 based on the Sheldon rarity scale.
Unlike other examples of Noe-16, this piece is well-centered with a sharp strike and nearly complete obverse and reverse border details. The surfaces are fully lustrous light gray with attractive light gold toning on each side. Like many of the Massachusetts silver coins, the Noe-16 features inexperienced die work with poor spacing, recutting and other anomalies that add to the charm of these important early American coins. Listed on page 41 of the 2018 Guide Book.
