1779 TOKEN Rhode Island Ship Token, No Wreath, Brass, MS64 PCGS. Betts-562, W-1730, R.3. The Rhode Island Ship tokens were British propaganda medals intended to keep the Dutch out of the Revolutionary War. The design extols the British occupation of Aquidneck Island in August 1778. Betts-562 is the intermediate variety with VLUGTENDE removed from the obverse exergue, since that word suggested Admiral Howe fled the scene. This unabraded and unworn example retains glimpses of the initial bright brass color in protected areas. The high points and open fields are toned gunmetal-gray. One minor field bulge below the L in ADMIRALS. Listed on page 52 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 2 in 64, 1 finer (4/17).
