Buffalo Nickels
1938-D 5C MS68 PCGS. An exceptionally sharp strike and nearly mark-free, highly lustrous surfaces are exceeded only by the vibrant, exquisite toning that graces both sides of this Superb Gem nickel. A thin band of violet melds into lemon-yellow and pale-gold toning for fantastic eye appeal.
The last of the erstwhile Buffalo nickel series was struck at the Denver Mint in 1938, and many examples were hoarded for that reason. There is no question that this remarkable example was put away and carefully preserved, at some point acquiring its sumptuous toning while retaining its Mint-fresh luster. Neither PCGS nor NGC have seen a numerically finer 1938-D nickel, making this Registry-grade MS68 a prime candidate for the finest set. Population: 23 in 68 (1 in 68+), 0 finer (4/17).
