Early Half Dimes
1795 H10C V-5, LM-8, R.3, MS62 PCGS. The obverse was used to coin both the LM-8 and LM-9 varieties, with LM-8 representing the first use of the obverse die paired with the final use of the reverse die. A hoard of more than 100 Mint State half dimes was discovered in the 1870s, adding to the availability of high-grade pieces from the LM-8, LM-9, and LM-10 die marriages. Still, appealing Uncirculated pieces are scarce and much sought-after for type purposes.
This example displays rich border toning on the obverse, with shades of cobalt-blue, russet, and amber-gold. Similar toning on the reverse is less intense, while the centers are silver-gray on both sides. As normal for the variety, the strike is incomplete on a few of the central and lower hair strands and generally across the eagle's breast and wings. The remaining elements are bold, with only a few minor marks and soft luster present throughout the coin. Population (all varieties combined): 31 in 62, 96 finer (5/17).
