Seated Quarters
1875-CC 25C MS65 PCGS. CAC. Briggs 1-A. The scarcity of the 1875-CC is well-noted by several researchers over the past 40 years or so. While not rare in an absolute sense (140,000 coins were struck), it is certainly conditionally rare and high-grade auction appearances are few and far between. Some people suggest the new Carson City twenty cent piece captured the attention of the public, while the erstwhile quarter issue -- struck in a nearly identical quantity -- languished as uninteresting.
This Gem representative occupies a spot in the Condition Census for the issue. CAC endorsed for quality, the softly lustrous surfaces glow beneath a covering of golden-gray toning with amber-gold and blue accents that congregate at the borders and accentuate the central motifs. The fields show a hint of reflectivity, now mellowed by the natural patina. The strike is sharp but not full, with rounding on stars 11 through 13 and slight weakness of the hair details. A few light lines and tiny marks are well-hidden in the toning. Population: 4 in 65 (1 in 65+), 1 finer. CAC: 7 in 65, 1 finer (4/17).
