Proof Seated Quarters
1869 25C PR67 ★ Cameo NGC. Briggs 2-B. The obverse is die doubled, most noticeably on the bottom of the horizontal shield lines, Liberty's left hand, and sandal. The interior portions on each side show magnificent contrast between frosted silver devices and gleaming, minimally toned mirrors. Golden-orange patina comprises the innermost circle of color, yielding to violet and blue hues with faint greenish elements toward the rims. Magnificent preservation and eye appeal. A paltry production of just 16,000 circulation strikes puts significant pressure on the 600 proofs struck in that year, especially considering business strikes are rated R.7 in Uncirculated condition. Still, proofs in this exalted grade are extreme rarities in their own right. This piece is tied with the Newman coin and one other example for the finest at either of the leading certification services. Census: 3 in 67 Cameo (3 in 67 ★), 0 finer (4/17).
