Seated Half Dollars
1867 50C WB-101 MS66 PCGS. CAC. This razor-sharp Premium Gem displays deep lilac, cobalt-blue, and green-gray patina throughout both sides. Liberty shows a narrow toning streak near her profile, which pedigrees the piece and distinguishes it among the few coins that exist near the top of the Condition Census. The surfaces retain much reflectivity beneath the toning, and the date rides high in the exergue as noted by Breen as B-4937. CAC endorsement adds to the appeal.
Although more than 400,000 pieces were struck, this Philadelphia date circulated extensively, and only a fraction of the survivors are in XF or better grades. PCGS and NGC combined have encapsulated fewer than 250 examples in all grades, confirming the overall elusive nature of the issue. At MS66, it is conditionally rare, witnessed by the extremely low PCGS population and the fact that NGC has not certified any examples above MS65. PCGS population: 3 in 66, 2 finer. CAC: 2 in 66, 1 finer (4/17).
