Franklin Half Dollars
1953-S 50C MS66 Full Bell Lines NGC. The 1953-S Franklin half dollar is a rarity with Full Bell Lines. NGC has so-designated only 13 coins in all grades, and this Premium Gem is the sole finest. PCGS reports two Full Bell Lines pieces in this grade, also with none finer (4/17). We have offered an ANACS-certified coin in this grade on two occasions, but the only NGC or PCGS-graded MS66 Full Bell Lines example that we have previously handled was in our August 2001 Atlanta Signature sale, lot 6331, where a PCGS coin garnered more than $35,000. In fact, no major auction house has sold an NGC or PCGS coin in this grade since.
This remarkable condition rarity will appeal to Registry Set collectors as a must-have Condition Census coin. The strike is bold, and the incredibly frosty surfaces show no toning and no distracting abrasions. A loupe reveals only a few microscopic mint-made marks, caused by debris in the recesses of the die -- a common sight on Franklin half dollars.
