Seated Dollars
1871-CC $1 AU58 NGC. OC-1, High R.4. The 1871-CC claims the lowest mintage of any Carson City Seated Liberty dollar, at a meager 1,376 pieces. One pair of dies was sufficient to strike the entire production run. This was the only use of the obverse die, which shows the top of an errant 1 in the denticles, below the 7 in the date. The reverse die was used previously to strike the OC-4 variety in 1870 and shows a "Wide CC" mintmark. Because of its limited mintage, the 1871-CC is one of the most challenging issues of the series, although the 1873-CC seems to be of about equal rarity. The surviving population numbers about 100 examples in all grades and high-grade specimens are very rare.
The present coin is an impressive near-Mint piece, with well-detailed design elements that show just a trace of actual wear. The lightly abraded surfaces are visited by subtle shades of lavender-gray and jade-gold toning, with a mix of satiny mint luster and prooflike reflectivity underneath. The overall presentation is most attractive. Census: 8 in 58, 4 finer (4/17).
