Morgan Dollars
1896-S $1 MS65 PCGS. Despite the more-than-adequate mintage of 5 million pieces, the 1896-S Morgan dollar is one of the most challenging issues of the series in high grade. Even circulated examples are comparatively scarce, suggesting many specimens may have been melted in 1918, under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Additionally, the 1896-S was not a well-produced issue, and many survivors have weak strikes and subdued luster. Excessive surfaces marks are often a problem.
This attractive Gem exhibits well-detailed design elements that show just a touch of the typical softness on the hair strands above Liberty's ear. The surprisingly well-preserved surfaces are mostly brilliant, with a few subtle highlights of golden-tan and lavender. Vibrant mint luster radiates from both sides and eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 73 in 65 (3 in 65+), 5 finer (4/17).
