Gold Dollars
1853 G$1 MS66 PCGS. A strong die crack at star 3 is typical of the difficulties encountered when striking the Type One gold dollars, which led to one design change in 1854, and yet another in 1856. The dies were often cracked or clashed, although this radiant Premium Gem shows no signs of die clashing. Finely grained surfaces are frosted and sharply struck for the issue -- uncommonly so -- as confirmed by the high Mint State grade. In spite of a mintage exceeding 4 million pieces, the 1853 is scarce in MS66 and rare any finer. Population: 60 in 66 (5 in 66+), 12 finer (4/17).
