Early Quarter Eagles
1827 $2 1/2 BD-1, R.5, AU55 PCGS. This is the only die variety of 1827 quarter eagles, and the obverse is therefore unique to the BD-1 die pair. The reverse appeared on some 1825 quarter eagles, and all 1826 and 1827 quarter eagles. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c, as usual for the variety. The obverse die is perfect, as expected, with no die cracks, clash marks, or evidence of lapping. The reverse has a very slight clash mark below the left end of the scroll that appears to be from Liberty's throat. The die has been lapped, and there are no other clash marks or die cracks.
The mintage is estimated between 1,750 and 2,800 pieces, according to John Dannreuther who estimates that 45 to 55 examples are known today. This example has pleasing light greenish-gold surfaces and sharp design features on a well-centered impression with scattered, grade-consistent marks. Population: 8 in 55, 20 finer (4/17).
