Indian Half Eagles
1909-O $5 AU55 PCGS. The 1909-O has long been considered a key date in the Indian half eagle series, and its popularity has only increased in recent decades; as a result, examples of the date are frequently traded in the auction arena, much to the delight of eager series collectors. Among other key-date issues in the series, the heavily melted 1929 has a lower overall certified population than the 1909-O, but in Mint State grades the New Orleans issue emerges as the rarer date, and is extremely challenging in these grades. Of the small number of Uncirculated survivors known, the vast majority are heavily abraded, grading no finer than MS61. Which is why a problem-free Choice AU, such as this piece makes such a compelling purchase for the collector.
As the only Indian half eagle struck at the New Orleans Mint, the 1909-O also makes a nice "cap" on an O-mint half eagle collection, and is a necessity for a complete set of New Orleans gold. The resulting popularity of the issue in all grades ensures significant bidder attention for virtually all examples that appear at auction. The surfaces are bright and surprisingly problem-free for this often problematic issue. The mintmark is also well-defined.
From The Faris Collection.
