Liberty Double Eagles
1854-S $20 AU50 NGC. The San Francisco Mint opened in 1854 and a fairly modest mintage of 141,468 double eagles was accomplished. The coins circulated widely at the time of issue and most examples seen today are heavily worn. Most Mint State specimens are from shipwreck finds. This impressive AU example shows light wear on the well-detailed design elements and the orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster.
