Liberty Double Eagles
1882-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Double eagle coinage was suspended in 1880 and 1881 at the Carson City Mint. When coinage resumed in 1882, an adequate mintage of 39,140 Liberty double eagles was accomplished, making the 1882 one of the more available issues of the decade and a popular choice of branch mint type collectors.
The present coin is an impressive MS61 specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show just a touch of the usual softness on the curls above Liberty's ear and the eagle's claws. A vertical spike in front of Liberty's eye and a die line above the A in DOLLARS identify the scarcer Variety 1-A. The vivid orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster and show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade. Population: 45 in 61, 26 finer (4/17).
