Liberty Double Eagles
1882-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 2. The Mint State population of this low-mintage Carson City double eagle is almost entirely in the MS60 to MS62 range, with just two pieces certified finer than MS62 by both services combined. The rigors of foreign export and took their toll on the 1882-CC twenties, since it functioned as little more than a trade coin and those pieces that circulated domestically received significant marks from transportation and handling as well.
The present MS61 coin displays nice mint luster and light-green overtones with orange accents over lightly abraded, yellow-gold surfaces. The minor scuffiness aside, the coin is sharp and frosted with no heavy contacts. Considering that Select Uncirculated or finer coins are for all purposes unavailable, the MS61 level represents a good selection for many collectors who desire a clearly Mint State example. Population: 45 in 61, 26 finer (4/17).
