Liberty Double Eagles
1883-CC $20 MS60 PCGS. Variety 2-A. Gold specialist Mike Fuljenz speaks very highly of Carson City double eagles as an investment and a collecting pursuit. In Type Three Double Eagles, second edition, he writes of the 1883-CC: "This is one of my favorite Carson City double eagles for the new collector who wants a great introduction to this fascinating series. ... due to the fact that it is generally well made with good luster and an above-average appearance." The above-average appearance is in comparison to 1870s CC-mint twenties, which often lack the luster and sharpness seen on the 1883-CC.
The current coin is a conditionally elusive Mint State example with original olive-gold patina that shows ample peach-gold luster in the fields and recesses. We find no mentionable points of strike weakness, and grade-limiting abrasions are at a minimum for the grade.
