Liberty Double Eagles
1892-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. A small mintage of 27,265 Liberty double eagles was accomplished at the Carson City Mint in 1892, with a single die variety known for the date. As might be expected, the 1892-CC was considered a rare date when collecting double eagles first became popular in this country, in the 1940s. Fortunately, a number of coins have surfaced in hoards since the mid-1990s, making the issue relatively available today.
The coin offered here is an impressive MS61 specimen, with well-detailed design elements that show some of the usual softness on the star centers. A minute die chip is evident on the dentils, above the I in AMERICA. The lustrous orange-gold surfaces show a number of minor contact marks and luster grazes on both sides, explaining the grade. Population: 60 in 61, 58 finer (4/17).
