Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1908-D $20 No Motto MS65 PCGS. Long Rays Obverse. Mint Engraver Charles Barber continued to tinker with the double eagle motifs to increase Mint efficiency and die life, although not always to the aesthetic intent of the Augustus Saint-Gaudens design. Indeed, the 1908-D No Motto coins with the Long Rays Obverse seem to be better struck than their Short Rays counterpart. The Long Rays Obverse is identified by a ray nearly touching the stem tip of the olive branch. Wonderful orange-gold patina distinguishes this Gem example, with vibrant mint luster and remarkably few abrasions. A minor contact on Liberty's midsection is the sole mark of note. PCGS reports just 13 numerically finer examples (5/17).
