Patterns
1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-491, Pollock-578, Low R.7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. Five cent pattern with an obverse similar to the adopted Shield nickel design with date separated by the ball at the bottom of the shield. The reverse features a "Dutch" numeral 5 inside a laurel wreath. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Allegedly pieces were struck in both copper and bronze, although there is no visual way to determine which is which, and there is no designation on the PCGS insert that indicates elemental analysis was done. However, there is no difference in rarity stated in the Judd reference between the two; both are Low R.7. Pieces were also struck on thin and thick planchets. This is clearly a thick planchet variant. Significant amounts of bright red mint luster surrounding and within the devices, with medium brown patina elsewhere.
