Reeded Edge Half Dollars
1839-O 50C GR-1, R.1, AU55 PCGS. The recut mintmark clues the GR-1 variety, as does its position above 83 in the date. Struck from an advanced die stage, with strong die cracks circumnavigating the borders on both sides and radial cracks extending to the central motifs. The 1839-O is a necessity for Southern type and a favorite among half dollar collectors for its obverse mintmark and series-ending date. Bright, silver-gray surfaces show only a few light abrasions and strong definition despite the late die state. Population (all varieties): 40 in 55, 60 finer (4/17).
